About Lahu Embroidery

Each bag is originally designed and handsewn by the skilful Lahu ladies living in the remotest areas of Yunnan Province in Southwest China and Northern Thailand, where they preserve their primitive lifestyle in deep connection with nature. Lahu unique embroidery technique is a womanly tradition which is passed down generations as a primary skill for marriage. The cotton fabric is carefully embroidered to design bold and bright colour contrasts, a typical tribal mark. The bag is an important part of Lahu daily clothing both for men and women. It usually comes in a mix of bright colours such as red, black, yellow and green, featuring linear or geometric patterns which are representations of landscapes and natural elements. The recurring triangular shapes symbolise the teeth of the dog which Lahu are extremely devoted to, since they believe that it was a dog who rescued and raised their ancestor.
