About Lisu Hand Textile Art

Lisu people, the delightful creators of these unique bags, live at the borders of Yunnan Province in Southwest China, express their unique and independent cultural identity through clothing. In Lisu tradition, it is usually men who realise these bags to court ladies. Their weaving tradition is a lively mixture of exquisite techniques. Cotton thread is first woven in a traditional loom made of four wooden sticks. The vibrant floral patterns are then embroidered in eye-catching colour clashes. Then each individual bag is embellished with outstanding details to seize the attention of the fancied one: the extra-long frills can reach up to 20cm!
